None of the personnel from the department of music wanted to travel to Visby on the Baltic island of Gotland to produce a folk music programme. Thus the assignment fell to the department\u2019s youngest member. His name was Matts Arnberg.<\/p>\n<p>His background was in classical music, and Arnberg hadn\u2019t previously paid much attention to folk music. Yet during that midsummer weekend on Gotland he was \u201ddelivered\u201d. He has later told of how he wasn\u2019t moved by the official part of the gathering, in which folk dancers and musicians performed well-rehearsed programmes. When, however, the \u201dbush\u201d playing started, where the musicians were freer, he was almost stunned. \u201dThis was music, quality music, music with substance - I had never heard folk music like it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-8820-2-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8820-2-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_headers panel-first-child\" data-index=\"4\" ><div class=\"so-widget-headers so-widget-headers-base\"><h2 id=\"in-demand-material-is-now-available\">In-demand material is now available<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-8820-2-1-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><p>Swedish Radio\u2019s early recordings of folk music are greatly in demand. They have been used for music research and as a source of inspiration for new generations of folk musicians. They are now housed at the Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research. Today most of the recordings are available online - recorded from the early 1930\u2019s to the mid-1960\u2019s. This material comprises around 7000 recorded tunes and songs with around 800 musicians and singers.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"To the recordings\" href=\"http:\/\/katalog.visarkiv.se\/lib\/views\/srfolk\/HitList.aspx?ccl=find+xrfritext+%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">To the recordings<\/a><\/p>\n<p>M\u00e4rta Ramsten, ethnomusicologist and former head of the Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research, has written the article <em>Swedish Radio, Matts Arnberg and folk music - a piece of modern-day folk music history<\/em>. This is part of Ramsten\u2019s&nbsp;&nbsp;<a title=\"doctoral thesis\" href=\"http:\/\/urn.kb.se\/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:statensmusikverk-199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doctoral thesis<\/a>&nbsp;and the texts in this presentation are based on her article.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-8820-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-8820-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8820-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_puff_widget panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"6\" >\t\t\t<div class=\"inner with_title with_text with_picture with_link\" >\r\n\t\t\t<a href=\"\/svensktvisarkiv\/artikel\/folkmusik-i-radio\/?lang=en\">\t\t\t<div class=\"puff-picture\"><img src=\"\/svensktvisarkiv\/files\/2016\/10\/Radio-puff.jpg\" alt=\"Puff Picture\" \/><\/div>\t\t\t<h4>Folk music on the radio<\/h4>\t\t\t<div class=\"puff-text\">Matts Arnberg greatly enhanced the status of folk music and let the general public hear more of it.
